King Solomon's Mines Customer Reviews

:
  • from Ray F -- VINE VOICE : Classic 19th century adventure tale with period biases but a good read. ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Septimus Severian -- Cheap cash grab by publisher : This review does not address the quality of H. Rider Haggard's writing, because that's not what you get when you buy this Kindle edition. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Fedoradude -- Such a contrast between the binding and the pages : A very impressive binding to be sure. The cover looks very classical, etc. However, the pages of the book on the inside just photocopied a paperback novel onto 8x10 paper and bound that. Not only is that a lot of wasted space, but it's also a pretty shaded copy job. This is NOT what one sees when using the "Look Inside" option of the book on the Amazon website. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from AZ McLennon -- Before Raiders of the Lost Ark, there was King Solomon's Mines... : Sadly, this series of high adventure in exotic lands featuring fascinating peoples and charismatic heroes has gotten lost in the passage of time. Once a popular set of stories, they still contain elements of brilliant story-telling and plot building. I suggest you give these a try. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Randall Lemon -- Classic Pulp : This adventure yarn has stood the test of time. It has been made in to numerous film versions, one starring Stewart Granger and another starring Richard Chamberlain as Allen Quatermain. Some readers may only be familiar with the Quatermain character as he was portrayed by Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film (but that was an entirely different story.) The story is entertaining enough and fairly well written although one cannot confuse author, Haggard with classical authors. Still, the story is fun and packed with numerous life or death scrapes. Modern readers need to remember that this book was written long before the civil rights movement and may jar readers with racist language. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Joshua Plumeau -- Weird Version? : The overall story is pretty good. This specific version is a bit wonky. Everywhere it should have had the word "land" it said "united states of america" with no capital letters. Considering the book is set in Africa, it was a bit odd. In place of the word friend it says buddy, and guy in place of the word man. I'm assuming it's something with this version on Kindle and not from the book itself. I will probably go to the library to determine that for sure. I'd recommend the book, but not this version of it. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Dated : Haggard pioneered the adventure story as a campy form, and this is his most well known one. I've also read "Queen Sheba's Ring" and that was actually better than this one, yet followed a similar formula. Here, our narrator Alan Quartermain isn't even particularly likeable. So why, then, is this Haggard's most well known? Maybe it's because of the mythical lost treasure, as opposed to lost civilizations. After all, Ignosi points out numerous times that white men love their treasure (paraphrasing)... ( Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Please don't waste your time and money on this version, a g : How on earth did this ever get published, I stuck with it but in the end I gave up. It made no sense, it is like a translation of a translation of a translation. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Brilliant and engaging African adventure in the turn of the 20th century!! : This book was a veritable masterpiece of high adventure in the African continent. It was compelling reading and is a classic. It was of a literary artifact of that era. It was dramatic, exciting and never dull to read. Old English featured quite prominently in this book and it is fascinating to see it in the prose of the story and of the characters' conversations. It showed an insight into African culture of that time. Tragic events and yet good deeds were done in this story. It was a gripping book. Henry Rider Haggard wrote with great aplomb. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. D. Fitzpatrick -- A ripping adventure yarn. : An excellent adventure story featuring Alan Quartermain and set in Sotern Africa. Written in 1885 and best seller of the year, it is very much of the period, both in language and in outlook. In many respects it Is not ‘politically correct’, but it’s value as social history is great. This is a book to wean boys off their electronic pads. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JONO5K1 -- Brisk 15 hour read. And Brilliant too! : Very male, very boyish.A teen classic I would say.Nevertheless as a fully fledged adult, I enjoyed it immensely.Well worth a day's read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brian W Hume -- Boys own legend : King Solomon's MInes is a wonderful book, full of great adventures. As a schoolboy, I was transfixed by every chapter. Having read it again as an adult, once more my dreams have been filled with ideas of treasures and wonderful adventures. The author keeps the pace going at a tremendous rate and each adventure is described so vividly. In all, a really classic book and one that I recommend for all you adventurers out there !
