• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cheryl Peyton -- The History of Cedar Rapids is best told by the life stories of its people : The title of the book comes from Hebrews 12:1, referring to the faithful who have gone before us who have inspired us by the examples of their lives. This is an apt description of the accomplishments of the courageous men and women whose stories are told here. Their efforts helped to shape the character and vitality of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I would hope that everyone who lives there would read this book to appreciate the wonderful place they call home. This is a city of immigrants, like all American cities, but what's special is how seamlessly all ethnic groups blended together and helped one another. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret S. Verble -- Oral Histories : This is a collection of oral histories of people who helped establish Cedar Rapids, IA. It mostly focuses on the early leaders of the community, and reading it gives you a real sense of the bedrock conservative values that characterized the settlers of the mid-west. These types of books take years of effort to pull together, and Laura Derr has done an excellent job in editing it. I've read several books like this about other areas of the country and always find them enlightening. This one was no exception, and I'm thankful there are scholars like Derr who take on this kind of work even though it is most often unprofitable and not fully appreciated for the contribution it makes. Organized thematically it tells the story of Cedar Rapids, an immigrant community incorporated in 1849, that grew up on the banks of the Cedar River, and how the sons and daughters of blacksmiths, brewers, laundry women, farmers, servants and grocers made their town a creative, artistic, philanthropic center that has thrived and grown despite floods and storms, 100 years of sometimes harsh economic transition and cultural evolution. The interviewees take us through the founding of the town by Bohemian immigrants up through tragedies and establishment of vital businesses and institutions. When we read their words, we can feel their passion, concerns, and dedication to their town, their work mates, and their neighbors, the elements that create a thriving community. Laura Derr does an excellent job pulling the interviews together and giving them context. She has added photos of each interviewee and a short biography. Footnotes and an index contribute value.
